What To Do If Your Ice Machine Is Not Producing Ice

When you push your glass against the ice dispenser in the refrigerator door and nothing occurs, it is aggravating.

In our years of expertise repairing home appliances, we've encountered every problem that can occur with icemakers and dispensers.

Listen First

  • Do you hear anything when you push your glass against the ice dispenser?
  • As the auger rotates within the ice bin, a rumbling sound should emanate from it. If there is a rumbling but no ice, there is ice lodged in the door chute that needs to be taken out.
  • If there is only a hum and no rumble, the auger is jammed and cannot spin. It should be remedied by emptying the bin and replacing the ice.
  • If there is no noise at all, the dispenser switch is faulty and should be replaced by a professional.
  • If you can hear the auger turning and there are no obstructions in the chute, but there is still no ice, check the water supply.

Verify Water Supply

  • When you press your glass towards the water dispenser, a lovely stream of water should emerge. Otherwise, the water supply may have been cut off. If there is no water in the dispenser, there is likely no water in the ice maker.
  • Pull the refrigerator away from the wall in order to inspect behind it. You should discover a valve for the water line to your refrigerator against the wall.
  • To open the water supply, turn the valve as far counterclockwise as it will go. Some valves only rotate 90 degrees. On this type, the knob must be aligned with the refrigerator's water line.
  • If there is still no water, the line is likely frozen and must be thawed.

Examine Temperature

  • Check the freezer's temperature with a thermometer. The temperature should be 0 degrees.
  • If the temperature is -3 degrees or below, the water dispenser and icemaker lines may freeze. You will need to defrost them.
  • Transfer the contents of your freezer to your refrigerator, then disconnect your refrigerator and leave the freezer door wide open for eight hours. This will melt the accumulated ice.
  • While the freezer defrosts, place any ice, you have in the refrigerator section and close the door to keep the food cool.
  • Then, reconnect the refrigerator, place the frozen items back in the freezer, and restore the freezer temperature to 0 degrees.

Examine for a Blocked Ice Chute

  • Check the hole or chute through which the ice goes by opening the refrigerator door with the ice dispenser. Ice fragments frequently melt inside the chute, causing a blockage.
  • Reach inside the chute from the top, remove any ice, and place it in the sink.
  • Ensure that the chute is entirely empty.

Examine for a Blocked Ice Bin

  • Open the refrigerator door and remove the ice bin. To release it, you may need to press a plastic button. Bring the container toward you and place it on the counter.
  • There should be a circular metal gadget along the length of the bin. This is the auger, which must rotate to move the ice to the chute. Ensure that there is no ice blocking the auger from turning.
  • Reach to the compartment's back, where the ice bin is located. A two-pronged metal fork is located beneath the icemaker and is used to rotate the auger.
  • Grab it and rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise with your hand. There should be some opposition, but it should yield. As you turn it, you should hear a mechanical whirring sound.
  • Call a professional to fix the auger motor and gearbox if it will not turn or if it turns easily.
  • Ensure that the ice bin is completely reinserted until it clicks. If it is not fully retracted, it cannot discharge ice.
